Siesta Key is a barrier island located off the coast of Sarasota, Florida. Renowned for crystal-clear waters, Siesta Key beaches have attracted visitors from all over the world for many years. However, the history of Siesta Key is much older than its popularity as a tourist destination. The fact that none of the sand on Florida’s well-known beaches is native to the state may be the most surprising aspect.
After the Appalachian Mountain range was formed by continental collisions, it started to endure severe erosion due to chemical and physical weathering, which brought the chain’s summits’ maximum height down to 6,684 feet from as high as 25,000 feet in the past and generally much lower. In retrospect, the Southeastern United States benefited from the Appalachians’ composition since its rocks were rich in quartz, one of the planet’s hardest and most resilient minerals.
How was Siesta Key formed?
Around 3,000 years ago, another significant alteration in the shoreline occurred as a series of barrier islands started to emerge from the Gulf. Afterward, in a process known as upward shoaling, Siesta Key was formed by a combination of maritime pressures and an abundance of Appalachian sand that was transported by longshoremen and was used to build up Siesta Key through a series of succeeding beach-dune ridges.
With the end of the last Ice Age, glacial melting caused sea levels to rise once more, literally drowning the western 100 miles of Florida’s west coast and destroying half of the peninsula’s land between 18,000 and 7,000 BCE.
As a mixed-energy barrier island, Siesta Key has the advantage over the other keys in Sarasota County. According to Davis, a mixed-energy barrier island is “broad at one end due to sediment accumulation… yet narrow at the other end indicating sediment deprived conditions.” This yields a significant, distinctive “drumstick” form.
When Did People Begin Living on Siesta Key?
People have lived in Siesta Key, Florida for thousands of years. The Calusa People, who are said to have inhabited the island for more than 5,000 years, were its initial settlers. One of the most developed civilizations in pre-Columbian North America was that of the Calusa, who were expert fishers and traders.
The island was utilized for farming and fishing once Europeans arrived. The first permanent settlements on the island were founded in the middle of the 19th century, with Capt. Louis Roberts constructing the first homestead in 1846.
Until the early 20th century, the island was mostly rural and poorly populated. During that time, developers started to see the potential for tourism and rentals on Siesta Key. In 1917, the island’s first bridge was constructed, facilitating easier access for tourists.
The Development of Siesta Key
Capt. Roberts expanded his home and started referring to it as the Roberts Hotel in 1906. The Siesta Land Company was established by him, Harry Higel, and E.M. Arbogast the following year. Government maps from 1946 still referred to the Key as “Sarasota Key,” but the County referred to it as Siesta Key.
Wealthy visitors from the northern states started flocking to Siesta Key in the 1920s and 1930s, and they started to construct opulent mansions right on the beach. As hotels, eateries, and other tourist amenities grew on the island throughout the 20th century, its popularity grew as well.
Throughout the following decades, Siesta Key continued to evolve as a popular tourist destination, with new businesses and attractions opening up to meet the needs of visitors. However, the island has managed to preserve much of its unique charm and natural beauty, thanks in part to efforts by local residents and environmentalists.
